Can People Tell the Difference Between Modular and Stick Built Homes? No!

Two weeks ago, Homes by Vanderbuilt ran a survey to see whether our community could tell the difference between modular and stick built homes.  You can find the original survey here.

Drum roll please…

The answer is no!  Overall, users correctly identified the modular home 28.3% of the time.  With 4 possible choices, the results are similar to those recorded from random guessing!

Also of note is that nearly 90% of the survey takers changed their mind on at least one question.  Contrary to the popular myth that you should go with your instinct and never change your test answer, it was proven by a team of researchers led by Dr. Ludy Benjamin that students who changed their answers went from right to wrong 20.2% of the time but went from wrong to right 57.8% of the time!  The group analyzed the results of 33 studies conducted over the course of 70 years.  In fact, in none of these studies did people get a lower score because they changed their minds.

So this begs the question…

How do you tell the difference between a modular home and a stick built home?

Without being an architect, inspector, or home builder, the easiest way is to find the serial number and label permanently attached somewhere in the building that states the home as a modular building and documents its compliance with building code standards.
